I shared last week about our Promotion timeline at Kids Quest. This week is promotion Sunday and we’ll begin introducing Small Group leaders. On September 7th, kids will be assigned to small groups and they’ll officially begin that relationship for the 2008/2009 school year. It’s going to be great.
I personally began recruiting Small Group leaders in June and we’re still going strong. Of our existing Elementary volunteers, about 6 committed to being small group leaders. That left us with 25 more to recruit. As of right now, I have 21 committed small group leaders. In addition to the 21, I have about 10 who are in the pipeline. They’ve indicated that they would like to be a small group leader, but they haven’t finished the application/interview process. Yeah, we’re cutting it pretty close. The nice thing is that I have over 15 subs and general helpers. So, in the long run, we’re going to be okay… but just barely.
Here’s why finding 31 small group leaders has taken all summer (and we’re still not done yet). First of all we’re looking for adults who will commit to serve in this role every week during one service. Secondly, we’re asking these volunteers to serve for an entire year. It’s a vital relationship that we’re banking on, so we are demanding consistency for this relationship. Last of all, we’re walking all of these adults through our leadership process. They’re filling out a ton of paperwork, getting their background checked, references checked and sitting through a thorough interview with me. Unfortunately, not ever person who began the process will be a small group leader. I’m being very selective. Gateway is a great church where anyone can come as they are. Our church is filled with people who are at all different points along their journey with Christ. However, for this particular position, I’m looking specifically for people who are far along their way in this journey. I’m being so selective because these small group leaders will have significant spiritual influence over our elementary kids. So, in the process of interviews and such, I lose a few potential small group leaders. We find other places where they can still serve and grow in this area.
All that being said, I could probably use a few more small group prospects. If the fifteen or so we have in the pipeline work out, we will barley have enough, but I really don’t think all 15 are going to be perfect fits. It looks like I have the 11:00 service covered but I still need a few more boys and girls small group leaders at 9:30 and I definately need a few more at 12:30. If you think you might be interested in making an eternal impact on the life of a child, shoot me an email. If not, spread the word. I’ve actually gotten a few small group leaders by word of mouth. Last of all, pray for us in this process. God is getting to do something really great this Fall and we still need him to bring the last remaining players.
